Gin Rummy is one of the most popular card games accross
the world.
It's perhapts the more interesting 2-players card game.
The deck
The classical deck of 52 cards is used, from Ace to Ten, Jack, Queen and King, and with the four classical suits : spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds.
Cards from Ace to 10 have values of 1 to 10 and figures (Jack, Queen and King) have a value of 10.
The deal
The first dealer is choosen randomly for the first deal then the winner of a deal becomes the dealer of the next deal. Each player is dealt 10 cards and the 21st card is shown in the called "DISCARD" pile. The remainder of the deck is called "STOCK" pile. The first player to play is the non dealer.
Goal of the game
The goal of the game is to arrange as many as possible of the ten cards in your hand into sequences or groups of cards. A sequence consists of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order. A group is consists of three or four cards of the same rank.
The play
The dealer let his opponent begin.
A turn consists of drawing one card from the STOCK or the DISCARD then throwing
a card from his hand. Then the opponent plays.
If you take a card from the discard, you can not throw it (you'll have to
wait for your next turn if you want to throw it).
For the first turn of the hand, the draw is done in a special way. The
non-dealer draw the discard or pass. If he pass, the opponent can also pass
then the non-dealer draw a card from the stock. If one of the two player take
the discard, the deal goes on like described above.
The end of a deal
A deal ends like that :
- one of the players go down with a Gin OR :
- one of the two players goes down with a Knock OR :
- the deal is drawn (there are 2 cards in the stock and nobody goes down).
GIN
Having 11 cards in your hand and 10 cards belonging to sequences or groups,
you can go down saying "Gin" and throwing the 11th card.
With GIN RUMMY PRO, you are automatically informed when you can gin.
When you Gin, you have a special bonus (see Scores topics) plus the knock of
your opponent.
KNOCK
Knock means the remaining of value of your cards, once you arranged your hand in sequences or groups.
To Knock, your remaining cards must be lower or equal the maximal knock. The
max. knock is determined by the first card in the discard (called the upcard)
or 10 if you chose the "max. knock = 10" game variation. If you chose
the "Gin" variation, you cannot knock : you have to gin to go down.
When you knock, you earn the difference between remaining cards of you opponent
and yours.
The opponent of the knocker may LAY OFF unmatched cards in order to reduce his
knock.
If the knock of the non-knocker is lower or equal the knock of the knocker, the
non-knocker wins the deal and gets a special bonus (see Scores topics). This go
down is called UNDERCUT.
Drawn deal
If the stock pile is reduced to two cards and the player who took the third last card discards without knocking, the deal is drawn.
SCORES COMPUTING
Score of a deal
If a player Gin, he scores a special bonus of 25 points plus the opponent
remaining cards value.
If a player Knock, he scores the difference between opponent remaining cards
value and his own remaining cards value (knock difference).
If a player Undercut, he scores a special bonus of 25 points plus the knock
difference.
Score of a game
When a player reaches the game goal points (100, 120 or more), the game ends and Final Score is computed like that :
Final Score = 100 points + Winner Score - Looser Score + 20 x deals
difference between winner and looser.
If Final Score equals to 0, Final Score is x 2.
In some cases, this Final Score may be negative then the winner is the looser !
